BOTOX® Cosmetic is the #1 treatment for dynamic wrinkles around the eyes (crow’s feet), between the eyebrows (the “11’s or worry lines) and the forehead. It is quickly becoming a favorite treatment among women and men looking to improve their appearance. BOTOX has a long history in ophthalmology and was first used for spasms around the eyelids in the 1980s until the cosmetic effects of wrinkle reduction were noticed. Many ophthalmologists and specialists have used Botox to reduce facial wrinkles, primarily around the eyes and forehead.
Since its FDA Approval in 2002 for cosmetic use, Botox has become the country’s number one non-invasive cosmetic treatment. At the same time, the number of people injecting Botox has risen exponentially, with many clinics and spas having technicians, nurses, or even doctors with little or no formal training. Therefore, it is essential to clarify who will be conducting your treatment. A technician with little to no formal training or a board-certified surgeon – well versed in facial anatomy performing your injections. Ophthalmic cosmetic surgeons like Dr. Swati Singh are among the most experienced and highly trained doctors in using Botox to remove wrinkles, lines, and contour irregularities.
It is also essential for you to know how much Botox is being injected. A reputable center does not dilute or store reconstituted Botox for long periods as this can result in decreased effect and inferior results. Most patients use an average of 50 Units. Ten units by each eye, 20 units between the eyebrows and ten on the forehead. However, your treatment is customized to your specific wrinkle pattern. Dr. Singh injects Botox by unit, so the patient gets exactly what they pay for. Extensive records are kept of your injections to use as a reference for your future procedures.
Some confusion exists between the use of Botox and the use of facial fillers such as Juvederm, Vollure, Voluma and Bellafill.
Botox decreases muscle contraction and helps reduce dynamic wrinkles caused by movement. Dynamic wrinkles appear temporarily when a muscle contracts during facial expression (i.e., smiling, frowning). Botox is usually most effective around the eyes and forehead. Facial fillers help “fill” volume deficits and smooth out static wrinkles caused by volume loss and gravity. Fillers are generally most useful around the mouth and mid-face but can also be used to define the jawline and nose. A combination of Botox and facial fillers is often required to achieve the best results.
